About Split Flap

Split Flap is the airport departure board: every cell flips through the drum of characters until it lands on its letter, with the click-clack rhythm of the real thing.

Split Flap is a text animation for React 19, styled with Tailwind CSS 4 and animated with Motion. It drops into Next.js, Vite, Remix or Astro through the shadcn CLI as a single file you own.

When to use Split Flap

  • Travel and transport sites.
  • Countdowns and launch boards.
  • Scoreboards and live numbers.
  • Retro and industrial brands.

How it works

Each cell steps through the character set with top and bottom halves flipping in 3D. Cells settle at different times, and the final text is plain for screen readers.

The real text stays in the page for screen readers and search engines; the animated letters are decorative copies marked aria-hidden. With prefers-reduced-motion on, it holds still or settles instantly instead of animating.

Customizing Split Flap

Every prop is documented in the API reference above with its type and default. The ones you will reach for first are listed here.

The Customize panel next to the preview lets you change length, speed live, and the Code tab updates to match, so the snippet you copy already carries your values.

  • text (string).
  • length (number): Pad or trim to this many cells.
  • speed (number, default 30): ms per flip.
