Scroll Expand
A pinned section whose media starts as a small centred frame and grows to fill the viewport as you scroll, with a caption that lands once it is full. The viewport is measured from the scroll container, so it also works inside a scroll box.

About Scroll Expand
Scroll Expand pins a section whose media starts as a small centred frame and grows to fill the viewport as you scroll, with a caption that lands at the end.
Scroll Expand is an image effect for React 19, styled with Tailwind CSS 4 and animated with Motion. It drops into Next.js, Vite, Remix or Astro through the shadcn CLI as a single file you own.
When to use Scroll Expand
- Product launch videos.
- Hero showcases.
- Storytelling pages.
- Case-study openers.
How it works
A sticky frame's scale and radius map to scroll progress through a tall section.
Images keep their alt text, controls are keyboard operable, and the effect never hides the content it decorates. With prefers-reduced-motion on, it holds still or settles instantly instead of animating.
Customizing Scroll Expand
Every prop is documented in the API reference above with its type and default. The ones you will reach for first are listed here.
The Customize panel next to the preview lets you change scale, height, title live, and the Code tab updates to match, so the snippet you copy already carries your values.
- src (string).
- alt (string, default "").
- video (boolean, default false): Treat `src` as a muted looping video.
- scale (number, default 0.35): Starting size as a fraction of the full frame.

Frequently asked questions
- How tall should the scroll expand section be?
- Two to three screens is typical. The media grows from a small frame to full screen over that scroll distance, so a taller section makes the expansion slower and more cinematic.
- How do I install Scroll Expand?
- Scroll Expand is part of Charcoal UI Pro. Add the @charcoal registry to components.json with your access token, then run npx shadcn@latest add @charcoal/scroll-expand. It copies scroll-expand.tsx into components/ui and installs motion, clsx, tailwind-merge.
- Is Scroll Expand free for commercial use?
- Scroll Expand needs a Charcoal UI Pro seat, monthly or a one-time lifetime price. A seat covers unlimited personal and commercial projects, including client work, and every future Pro component.
