About Rubber Segment
Rubber Segment gives the classic segmented control a rubber thumb: the leading edge stretches to the new option first, then the trailing edge springs after it and the thumb squashes into place, which reads as fast and deliberate.
Rubber Segment is an input component for React 19, styled with Tailwind CSS 4 and animated with Motion. It drops into Next.js, Vite, Remix or Astro through the shadcn CLI as a single file you own.
When to use Rubber Segment
- View switchers like board, list and calendar.
- Tabs for small panels.
- Chart range pickers.
- Settings with a few exclusive options.
How it works
The thumb's leading and trailing edges animate with different timing, which creates the stretch without any extra layout work. It is a radiogroup with arrow keys, and reduced motion moves the thumb in one step.
It is a real form control: it has an accessible name, works with the keyboard alone, shows a visible focus ring and announces its state to screen readers. With prefers-reduced-motion on, it holds still or settles instantly instead of animating.
Customizing Rubber Segment
Every prop is documented in the API reference above with its type and default. The ones you will reach for first are listed here.
Style it with className like any other element. It only uses your theme's tokens, so it follows light and dark mode without extra work.
