About Paper Crumple
Paper Crumple splits an image into tiles that fold toward your grip as you hold and drag it, with shading on every crease, then springs flat when you let go. It is pure delight for portfolios and playful pages.
Paper Crumple is an image effect for React 19, styled with Tailwind CSS 4 and animated with Motion. It drops into Next.js, Vite, Remix or Astro through the shadcn CLI as a single file you own.
When to use Paper Crumple
- Portfolio and gallery pieces.
- Landing page hero images.
- Interactive campaigns.
- Games and toys on the web.
How it works
Each tile reads the grip point and crumple amount from shared motion values and computes its own tilt, offset and shade, so nothing re-renders during the drag. The element is labelled as an image, and reduced motion disables the crumple.
Images keep their alt text, controls are keyboard operable, and the effect never hides the content it decorates. With prefers-reduced-motion on, it holds still or settles instantly instead of animating.
Customizing Paper Crumple
Every prop is documented in the API reference above with its type and default. The ones you will reach for first are listed here.
The Customize panel next to the preview lets you change grid live, and the Code tab updates to match, so the snippet you copy already carries your values.
- src / alt (string).
- grid (number, default 8).
- width / height (number, default 320 / 220).
