About Gradual Blur

Gradual Blur adds a progressive blur along one edge of a scrolling container, so content melts out instead of being cut by a hard fade. It is the detail from modern iOS and macOS.

Gradual Blur is a display component for React 19, styled with Tailwind CSS 4 and animated with Motion. It drops into Next.js, Vite, Remix or Astro through the shadcn CLI as a single file you own.

When to use Gradual Blur

  • Scrolling lists and feeds.
  • Headers over scrolling content.
  • Image galleries.
  • Chat transcripts.

How it works

Stacked backdrop-filter layers each blur more than the last, masked to bands. It is static, pointer-transparent and costs no JavaScript.

Interactive parts are buttons or links with accessible names, decorative layers are hidden from assistive tech, and everything is reachable by keyboard. With prefers-reduced-motion on, it holds still or settles instantly instead of animating.

Customizing Gradual Blur

Every prop is documented in the API reference above with its type and default. The ones you will reach for first are listed here.

The Customize panel next to the preview lets you change position, height, strength, layers live, and the Code tab updates to match, so the snippet you copy already carries your values.

  • position (default "bottom"): The parent needs `position: relative`.
  • height (number, default 96): Depth of the band in px; its width for left and right.
  • strength (number, default 12): Blur at the outer edge in px.
  • layers (number, default 5): Steps between sharp and fully blurred.
  • tint (boolean, default false): Also fade towards the background colour.

The example on this page

  • Gradual Blur: Scroll the list; move the band to another edge.

  • Sortable List: A drag-to-reorder React list with lifted shadows and keyboard sorting
